New Dating App For Straight People Launched

I must confess, I'm a little Neanderthal. Until recently, I didn't know of any such things as dating apps. In fact, apps in general whether for Facebook or my smartphone, are just not my thing. The other day I tried to play the popular Angry Birds game on my smartphone. I had to fiddle with the thing for what seemed like an eternity before I could figure out what it is about. But back to the new dating app.

First there was Grindr. I must admit I just heard about it. This is a dating app for homosexuals. The maker of this app has now come up with a "friendship" app for straight people.

Whereas Grindr allows customers to scout for potential homosexual liaisons based on their location, Mr Simkhai says Blendr is intended to help users of any sexual orientation to forge friendships with people who share their interests or hobbies, such as knitting.

“’Friendship’ is not a euphemism,” he said. “We are matching people based on their interests. We’ll help you find people who have that specialist interest in your vicinity, whether it’s hiking, or knitting, so you can do that activity together. Alternatively it may be about practicing a language or looking for friends in your ethnic group,” he said.

With its associations to Grindr, it is likely to get hijacked by users looking for dates, if not sex, but that is not the intention, Mr Simkhai said.

“I want my mum to use this, and my cousins. If we end up being just a niche dating site, that’s great – life isn’t over – but our aspiration is really much more broad. See original story

The intention here was not to create a dating app, but a friendship one (that his mom would use) . But it appears like the creator does not mind it being "hijacked" into a niche dating site (how did we go from app to site?). Hopefully it won't, like Grindr, morph into an adult dating site/app. Reminds me of how Friend Finder dating site had to create Adult Friend Finder after one too many members started posting adult profiles.

I think an app like this would inevitably be transformed into a dating app for most people who use it, but hopefully the initial intentions are still used by SOME of the participants! :/
