February: Month of the Valentines, Super Bowl, and More

February is the second and the shortest month of the year with 28 days and 29 in a leap year.

February’s flower is the Iris and birthstone, also sometimes referred to as birthday stone, is amethyst. On the astrological side, the signs that fall on this month are Aquarius and Pisces.

It is Black History month in the USA and Canada. There is also Groundhog Day, a traditional festival celebrated in the USA and Canada on February 2.

There’s also Super Bowl Sunday in the USA. For those not familiar with American football, this is the championship game of the National Football League (NFL), which may be equated to Euro Cup (soccer championship) in Europe.

But of particular interest, in our context, is Saint Valentines Day (or simply, Valentines Day) which falls on February 14. Valentines Day is observed in honor of St. Valentine as a day for the exchange of valentines and other tokens of affection or friendship.

Valentines Day has become synonymous with love and romance. It is a day when lovers express their love for each other, by giving flowers, candy and other gifts, as well as romantic dinners out, and other activities.

But on the flip-side, it is also a time of worry and concern. For some of us, it is time to wonder whether the gift(s) will light up the significant other’s heart, or whether it is the right gift in the first place.

The situation may be exacerbated by tightness of budgets, which we almost everyone has experienced. We may not be able to purchase what we think befits the person who has opened his or her heart to us. This is a result of, in my opinion, being bombarded with commercials as well as “Hollywood mentality”.

It is the heart from which the gift comes that should count, rather than the gift itself. The assumption here, of course, is that the heart will inspire the mind to come forth with something meaningful. There are tried and true gifts out there that one is unlike to go wrong with (a dozen roses for her, for instance).

And then there those that have not yet found the one. Valentines Day can be doubly lonely in this case. The temptation to find someone, anyone, can be overpowering. If anyone would do for you, fine. But if you are looking for that special someone, it is best to be patient, though painful.

Your soul mate is out there. Convince yourself of that fact. Someone out there is combing through the Internet, or looking out in social places, for someone just like you. Sooner or later (and I hope sooner) your paths will meet.

Don’t compromise. Your search may seem like an eternity, but the effort is worth it. And it will make a future Valentines Day the more happy and appreciated.
