Dating Tips for Men Over 40 – Online and Offline
Let's face it. The need for love and companionship does not wane with age. In this post I’ll cover some dating tips for men over 40.
It might come as a surprise to you that over 40 singles is perhaps the fastest growing demographic. Well, I don’t actually have the stats to back up this view, but being constantly on the online dating scene, my own observation tells me this is fact.
The good thing is, you are not alone. (Hey, I’m over 40 too!) Blame it on ever-rising divorce rates and career considerations; the latter has caused marriages to be delayed.
Side not: This article assumes that you want to date someone who is close to your age.
Here then are some dating tips for men over 40:
1. Forget dating as you know it. At least, your notion of what “dating” is should not be as it was in your twenties. Leave the “dinner and a movie” and going to nightclubs to those still in their twenties. Try for a more relaxing atmosphere when the two of you can chat. Even a coffee date will do.
2. Go to an age-appropriate site. While it is possible to narrow down your search by age in general dating sites, it would be better to go where the narrowing down is already done for you. At 40 or even 50 plus, you do not consider yourself a senior, but the cut off some senior dating sites is 40. Anyone less than 40 is not welcome. This helps keep the sugar daddies and the cougars out, while also ensuring that older people don’t have to deal with unfair competition from younger ones. Of course, if you’re only 40 or so you can go to a regular dating or matchmaking site as you want to meet people of either side of 40 (but hopefully not 20).
3. Be relationship-ready. If you’re just coming out of a nasty divorce, or have lost your loved one, it would be in your own best interest not to date when you’re still in the grieving period. Be sure that your ready for a relationship before proceeding. It is even advisable to seek the help of a professional counselor in certain situations.
4. Be yourself. It is amazing how some 40 year old men suddenly start acting “young” when they get a date with a younger woman. Be yourself and act like the gentleman you really are, while still having fun. If she already knows how old you are, chances are she wants you to act your age. What’s better than to know that she wants you for who you are? And please, don’t lie about your age.
5. Avoid canned pick-up lines. The prettier the women, the greater the chance that she has heard that line before.
