A New Dating Site: For Ugly People

You might have heard about the ultra vain, attention-hungry dating site for beautiful people. They have been known kick members out for as much as putting on a little weight. I won’t mention their name here as that would tantamount to giving them exactly what they seem to seek, free publicity. Now a new dating site has recently launched for… well, ugly people.

A dating website for ugly people has proved a resounding success in Ireland, the Herald can reveal.
TheUglyBugBall.com, also known as TUBB, was launched in Ireland a year ago, and it already counts 9,000 subscribers in the Republic -- 60pc of them from Dublin.
"TheUglyBugBall.com originally launched in the UK [where it has 140,000 members] but we had such a huge interest in Ireland that we set a site up there a few weeks after the UK one," a TUBB spokesperson said.
"I think people like the site because they are slightly cynical of the way dating sites are portrayed pretty people getting together.
"The reality is that most of the people aren't really ugly, but it would never have really taken off if we had called it 'Average Person Dating Co'."
According to its creators, the site's appeal lies in its refreshing approach to the dating scene.

I totally agree that most people aren’t really ugly, but to me no one (except the likes of Adolf Hitler) is ugly. Since this new dating site appears to be the opposite of the other one for beautiful people, I wonder if they will kick out members who are suddenly not ugly any more (losing weight, cosmetic surgery etc.)? Just a thought.

Dating Site Kicks Out Ugly Members

Vanity. It's all vanity. Vanity of vanities. I am not a very religious person but I remember those words from Ecclesiastes (that's in the Bible for those who don't know) though not in that order (if my recall is right). The (online) dictionary defines vanity as "excessive pride in one's appearance, qualities, abilities, achievements, etc." There is a dating site lives up to that definition (at least the appearance part), BeautifulPeople.com, a dating site that claims to be for... you guessed it, beautiful people.

I am not sure whether it's about attention getting, free media publicity or both. But the site appears to get quite a bit of all that. It seems to have started when the site kicked out 5000 people in January of 2010 because they had put on some weight during the holiday season (see our post). Now the same site has been in the news again, having kicked out 30,000 people from the site:

AN ATTENTION SEEKING dating web site called Beautifulpeople.com has warned members, and yes, the media, that it has a virus that has let "ugly" singletons join up.

In a charming press release the firm claims that it has been hit with a "Shrek" virus - you know like the Ogre in the film, which in the past month has let a barrel load of "uglies" join.

"BeautifulPeople.com, the dating and networking community exclusively for good-looking people, has been hit by a virus that allowed 30,000 'ugly' people to invade the site," it said in a statement.

"Normally, everyone must pass a strict 'rating' stage, where existing members vote on whether new applicants are beautiful enough to join the site. But the rating module was brought down last month, allowing anyone - regardless of looks - to be accepted."
It is appalling that such elitist places exist, so why anyone who might previously been been(sic) denied membership would now to choose to join is a mystery. But join they have. Allegedly.

"We got suspicious when tens of thousands of new members were accepted over a six-week period, many of whom were no oil painting," said Greg Hodge, managing director of Beautifulpeople.com.

"We responded immediately, repairing the damage from the 'Shrek Virus' and putting every new member back into the rating module for a legitimate and democratic vote. The result is that we have lost over 30,000 recent members." See original story

BeautifulPeople.com Showed the Ugly Side of “Beauty”

Many have take issue with the dating site Beautifulpeople.com for kicking out 5000 of its members simply because they had put on a few extra pounds over the holidays. And as if this is not ugly enough by itself, the owner of this site had the audacity to support this ugly action by uttering even uglier words.

This guy by the name Robert Hintze was quoted as saying, ""Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model". Who said that "fatties" can't be beautiful? And whose standard of beauty is this nut referring to? But perhaps Mr. Hintze is not so much a nut as he is an astute business person: the site has been getting lots of free publicity. I'm pretty sure there many knocking on the door in attempt to belong in this exclusive club (not everybody who thinks they are beautiful gets accepted).

The concept of a beautiful person (especially the female of the species) as one whose ribs like to announce their presence has long been propagated by the media, advertising and of course Hollywood. But it is not held by everyone, not even every community.

In many communities, a beautiful woman is considered to one with a little more flesh over her bones. I know a few quite handsome guys who just love big women. And I'm sure there are many women out there who like big guys (and not necessarily in terms of muscle).

Who said fat or big can't also be beautiful? The terms BBW (acronym for Big and Beautiful Woman/Women) and BHM (for Big Handsome Men) were coined for a reason. And by the way, there are dating sites dedicated to these two groups of people.

What really irks me, aside from the action of BeautifulPeople.com and the ugly (mugly may be a better word but it's not in the dictionary) words of the owner is the superficiality of both the site and its members.

From what I understand, members are approved by other active members of BeautifulPeople.com (I wonder who picked the first batch when the site started?). 4 out of 5 people get rejected.

That one would even consider joining such a site speaks to the superficiality of it all. You have to be really obsessed with your own outer looks to try to get in such a site. That you seek others of the same caliber says a lot about the quality what lies inside you, as well as every member or aspiring member of such a dating site.

As Confucius once said, "Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it". I would like to substitute one word and say everybody has beauty, but not everyone sees it.

Now let's turn the tables for an instance and ask; were the members that were kicked out at one time responsible for rejecting a member or two at one time or other? How does it feel to be wearing the ugly shoe now?

You might know some physically attractive people out there who are also obnoxious. You might also know that you don't like them that much. I won't name names, but some super models are known to excel in the specialty, if I may call it that, of obnoxiousness and sheer pomposity.

The biggest and best reason for having a body weight that is not excessive is not "beauty" per se. It is health. You want to avoid things like elevated blood pressure, clogged arteries and the like. But putting on a few pounds does not make you less beautiful. Oprah has at times gained a few pounds but she was still beautiful in my eyes.

The amazing thing is how fast the site acted to kick out the 5000 members. Did all of them post new photos right after the holiday season? Is it a requirements member posts new photos periodically or after the holidays?
